Uruguay defeats Argentina 2-0 in WC qualifying match

Published

In a significant turn of events, Uruguay emerged victorious over Argentina with a score of 2-0 during their World Cup qualifying match at La Bombonera Stadium in Buenos Aires.

This triumph marks the most impressive win under the leadership of Uruguay’s new coach, Marcelo Bielsa.

The match marked Argentina’s first competitive loss since their group-stage opener against Saudi Arabia in the previous year’s World Cup in Qatar. Lionel Messi, Argentina’s captain, acknowledged the team’s struggle to find their footing throughout the game, praising Uruguay’s physical strength and teamwork.

Uruguay, having secured a similar victory against Brazil in the previous World Cup qualifying round, is now scheduled to face Bolivia in their upcoming match. Despite this defeat, Argentina remains in the lead of the 10-team South American qualifying group with 12 points from five matches.

Uruguay follows closely in second place with 10 points, while Colombia and Venezuela occupy third and fourth positions with nine and eight points, respectively. Brazil, currently in fifth position with seven points, is set to host Argentina at Rio de Janeiro’s Maracana Stadium.
