Blackout: Ogun vows repairs of poles destroyed by heavy rain

The Ogun State Government has pledged its commitment to addressing the aftermath of a rainstorm that caused extensive damage to electric poles and installations in the Ado-Odo/Ota Local Government Area of the state.

This assurance was conveyed to the affected residents in a statement signed by the Special Adviser to the Governor on Media, Kayode Akinmade, following his visit to the affected areas on Monday.

According to the PUNCH, the victims expressed concerns about the fallen electric poles and installations opposite Bridge, Sango-Ota, following heavy rainfall.

The residents feared prolonged power outages and potential hazards to road users and residents due to the damaged infrastructure.

The affected communities, including Iyana Iyesi, Osuke Town, Egan Road, Lyana Ilogbo, Ijaba, Ijagba, and several others, witnessed significant disruption to power supply and infrastructure.

According to Akinmade, the government conducted a physical site inspection to assess the extent of the damage and coordinate efforts with the Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company team.

He stated, “We are currently working with the IBEDC team led by the Regional Manager and the Technical Head for the Ogun Region. Some of the less affected feeders have been restored and energized, while the clean-up of the most affected areas has already started.”

Akinmade further assured residents of ongoing efforts to ensure the complete restoration of power in Sango Ota and its environs, with measures to remove remaining damaged poles and expedite repair works. He extended sympathies to those whose properties were affected, urging calmness among residents in the affected areas.

A viral video circulating online showed the severity of the damage, with multiple electric poles and cables obstructing the road.

Efforts to reach the spokesperson for IBEDC, Busolami Tunwase, for further clarification on the incident, were unsuccessful as calls to her mobile phone went unanswered, and text messages remained unanswered at the time of this report.
