Former Ekiti State Governor Ayodele Fayose has sent a harsh thank you message to former President Olusegun Obasanjo after the ex-leader attended his 65th birthday in Lagos.
Obasanjo made the message public on Monday through his media aide, Kehinde Akinyemi, in Abeokuta. The text showed Fayose thanking him for coming, then attacking him over what he called the former president’s irresponsible comments at the event.
Fayose wrote, “Dear Baba Obasanjo, your coming to my birthday party, I appreciate it, except for your very irresponsible comments. Someone once said you are supposed to be kept away in the zoo. That is where you belong. I kept quiet so the world would know the difference between a sane man and a mad man.”
He also accused Obasanjo of losing his sanity and demanded the return of the money he sent to support his attendance. Fayose added, “I shall appreciate it if you return my money since you publicly admitted you received it.”
Obasanjo replied, saying the message only showed Fayose had not changed. He said, “Your money has been sent back through Foluso Adeagbo, in the same bag he delivered it, unopened by me.”
At the birthday ceremony, Obasanjo had reminded guests of Fayose’s past insults toward him and said the former governor often sought forgiveness without changing his behaviour. He noted that Fayose did not invite him directly but sent former Minister Osita Chidoka first, then later visited with his wife.
Obasanjo also recalled advising Fayose years ago not to invest state funds in a poultry project, which later failed. In a video from the event, he urged Fayose to embrace humility and seek forgiveness from those he had offended.
