How FG saved N300bn with second Niger Bridge revamp – Umahi
The Federal Government has revealed that it saved a whopping N300 billion by revamping the design of the Second Niger Bridge bypass.
Minister of Works, Engr. Nweze David Umahi, made this disclosure during an inspection visit to the rehabilitation of the Enugu-Port Harcourt Dual Carriageway section IV (Aba-Port Harcourt), managed by the China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation Ltd.
Umahi emphasized the government’s dedication to constructing long-lasting road infrastructure at the lowest possible cost, stating, “We aim to guarantee the availability of high-quality syringe products manufactured locally, creating lucrative employment opportunities for Nigerians.”
He elaborated on the significant cost-saving measure, saying, “And just only two days back, with these leaders, we went to Asaba, Delta State to look at the design of the bypass of the Second Niger Bridge, and we went to Onitsha. And by that singular movement, we saw that the design was defective and we agreed on a new kind of design. That was how we saved the country over N300 billion by that singular movement to that location.”
Umahi urged contractors to prioritize the welfare of road users and ensure road accessibility, especially during the rainy season. He also expressed gratitude to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his commitment to completing road projects promptly.
Additionally, the minister inspected various road projects across the country, including the upgrading of the East-West road section III, rehabilitation of the Enugu-Port Harcourt Expressway, and rehabilitation work at the collapsed bridge site near NNPC mega filling station in Enugu.
Stakeholders commended the minister’s hands-on approach and President Tinubu’s choice in appointing an expert to lead the Ministry of Works, expressing confidence in the progress and quality of ongoing projects.
Senator Onyekachi Peter Nwaebonyi praised Umahi’s proactive stance, stating, “This is what we want in this country, and I want to commend Mr. President for finding him worthy.”
Former Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator Anyim Pius Anyim, lauded Umahi’s passion and expertise, affirming that he has exceeded expectations in project implementation.
