Gunmen kill Katsina Islamic cleric, associate

Bandits raze palace, abduct Emir's wives, children in Kwara

Suspected bandits have shot dead an Islamic cleric, Sheikh Yahaya Masussuka, and his associate in Dutsin-Ma Local Government Area of Katsina State.

The incident reportedly occurred around 9 pm on Monday at the entrance to the cleric’s residence in Dutsin-Ma town, where the assailants allegedly opened fire on the two men.

Following the shooting, both victims were taken to Dutsin-Ma Hospital for urgent medical attention but were subsequently pronounced dead.

The deaths have sparked grief among residents, particularly members of the community familiar with the cleric and his religious activities.

The Katsina State Police Command has confirmed the death of the Islamic scholar. However, the circumstances surrounding the attack remain unclear, with no confirmed information available on the identities of the suspected assailants or their possible motive.

Sources also indicated that Masussuka had been preparing to host a religious gathering in Katsina State later this week before his death.

The cleric had previously attracted attention over controversies surrounding his religious teachings. On November 18, 2025, the Katsina State Government announced that he would be required to appear before a committee of Islamic scholars to explain his teachings.

However, no information available at the time of filing this report established any connection between the earlier controversy and the fatal shooting.
