Everton’s American owners, the Friedkin Group, are considering selling a controlling stake in the Premier League club less than two years after completing their takeover.

According to Vanguard, the Texas-based investment group confirmed on Friday that it was exploring new investment opportunities, including the possible sale of a controlling interest.

The development follows the group’s acquisition of former owner Farhad Moshiri’s 94.1 per cent stake in December 2024.

The transaction was reportedly worth £400 million, marking a new era for the Liverpool-based club.

The Friedkin Group, which also owns Italian Serie A side Roma, has overseen significant changes at Everton, including the club’s relocation from Goodison Park.

Everton owners explain potential sale

In a statement, the group reflected on Everton’s financial difficulties when it initially assumed control.

“When TFG became custodians of Everton, the club faced significant financial uncertainty,” the statement said.

The owners maintained that the club had since established a stronger foundation and was ready to consider another phase of development.

However, they stressed that any prospective investor must demonstrate the ability to protect Everton’s future.

The group indicated that it would only consider offers from parties capable of building on the progress achieved under its ownership.

Everton moved into the 53,000-capacity Hill Dickinson Stadium following decades at Goodison Park.

The club has also recorded consecutive 13th-place finishes in the Premier League under manager David Moyes.

Despite the announcement, no sale has been completed, and the owners have not identified a preferred buyer.

The development introduces fresh uncertainty over Everton’s ownership as the club continues its efforts to establish long-term financial and sporting stability.
