Public safety must come first in tackling stray dogs – Pakistan mayor

Karachi Mayor, Barrister Murtaza Wahab, has urged Pakistani authorities to introduce effective measures to prevent stray dog attacks, following reports of dog bites involving women, men and elderly residents across the city.

Wahab said the growing concern required immediate and practical intervention, stressing that authorities should focus on addressing the problem rather than passing responsibility to other institutions.

He maintained that neutering stray dogs alone would not be sufficient to resolve the issue, calling for a more comprehensive approach to ensure public safety and prevent further attacks.

Commenting on Turkey’s policy of killing stray dogs, the mayor observed that a similar move by the Karachi administration would likely trigger strong public opposition and protests.

He emphasised that protecting citizens from dog attacks should remain the priority, rather than allowing political disagreements to overshadow the issue.

Wahab also called on media organisations to play a constructive role in building public consensus around workable solutions to the stray dog problem, particularly in view of the dangers posed by dog bites and possible rabies infections.
