Five punishable acts of naira abuse
The EFCC, in recent times, has been arresting and convicting celebrities who were found guilty of mutilating Naira as against the CBN Act and the Criminal Code.
According to the Central Bank OF Nigeria Act, Sections 20 and 21, the abuse of the Naira is a punishable offense under the law in Nigeria.
The Central Bank of Nigeria’s Clean Notes Policy was implemented to enhance the visual appeal and durability of banknotes in circulation and maintain a high-quality standard, enabling them to be easily processed and accepted by the general public.
The following acts against the naira are punishable under the law:
- Spraying of naira notes
- Money Bouquet
- Hawking of naira notes
- Defacing the naira notes
- Squeeing of naira notes
The Criminal Code Act under Section 20 further stated that the above acts against the naira would earn the offender imprisonment ranging from six months to five years, along with fines.
