The National Population Commission has announced its plans to transition from manual to digital registration for birth, death, and other crucial civil information nationwide.

According to the acting Director of Public Affairs at NPC, Nkoyo Nwakusor, the shift towards digital registration aims to provide the public with the convenience of self-service and assisted-service options.

These services will cover various vital events, including birth, still-birth, death, birth attestation, diaspora birth and death notification, marriage and divorce notifications, migration registration, vital certificate verification, and hospital onboarding.

Nwakusor emphasized that the NPC plans to implement this transition using VitalReg, a state-of-the-art digital application. This technology will generate digital certificates for all registered events and establish accessible verification platforms for registered organizations.

The system will feature a central management dashboard that compiles and analyzes civil registrations into vital statistics. This data will be instrumental for effective planning and decision-making purposes.

NPC Chairman, Nasir Isa Kwarra, highlighted the significance of this move, stating, “The VitalReg represents a departure from the traditional paper-based recording of vital events to a state-of-the-art digital solution that conforms to international best practices.”

The digital transformation is expected to bring efficiency and accuracy to the registration process, streamlining the compilation of vital statistics for national planning.
