Court adjourns demolition of Abacha’s Durbar hotel till Feb 11

A High Court in Kaduna on Monday adjourned until February 11 hearing in the suit stopping the demolition and takeover of the Durbar Hotel Plc by the Kaduna State Government.

The hotel, located along Muhammadu Buhari Way in Kaduna, the capital, has been under litigation between the Federal Government and the Abacha family since 2001.

The Kaduna State Urban Planning and Development agency already demolished a section of the hotel as part of its urban renewal project before the suit was filed.

Justice Hanatu Balogun fixed the date for a report of compliance of an order restraining the state government and other parties restrained from demolishing the hotel.

The Abacha family joined the following in the ex-parte motion: the state government, Attorney General of the State and Commissioner for Justice.

At the resumed hearing, Counsel to the late Abacha family, Reuben Atabor, alleged that the defendants refused to adhere to the order of the court restraining them from demolishing the hotel.

He pleaded with the court to give an adjournment to enable them see the result of the compliance of the court order.

Director of litigation, Ministry of Justice, Sanusi Usman, who stood for the defendants, requested for a date to enable him come to an agreement with the plaintiff’s counsel.

The court had on January 21 restrained Governor Nasir El-Rufai and agencies of the state government from further demolishing and taking over of Durbar Hotel Plc.
