Portuguese football legend Cristiano Ronaldo has announced his retirement from international football, bringing an end to his 23-year career with the Portugal national team.

The 41-year-old forward confirmed his decision in an emotional video shared on his social media accounts on Thursday, November 5, 2026.

According to Reuters, Ronaldo will officially step away from international duties after the November international break, ending a career that saw him become the most-capped player and highest goalscorer in men’s international football.

The five-time Ballon d’Or winner leaves behind a remarkable legacy, having represented Portugal in 234 matches and scored 146 goals.

Addressing Portuguese supporters in his farewell message, Ronaldo explained that the time had come for another generation to represent the country.

“The day has come for me to hand back the number seven shirt,” he said.

The Al-Nassr forward described the decision as an emotional one after more than two decades of representing his country.

“It was not an easy decision,” Ronaldo added.

He explained that wearing Portugal’s iconic number seven shirt had been both a privilege and a responsibility throughout his international career.

Ronaldo also expressed appreciation to his family, teammates, coaches, national team officials and supporters who contributed to his journey.

The forward maintained that his connection with Portugal would remain an important part of his life despite his decision to retire from international football.

Ronaldo ends career with 146 goals, 234 appearances

Ronaldo made his senior international debut for Portugal on August 20, 2003, beginning a journey that would see him establish several major football records.

He played a leading role in Portugal’s victory at the 2016 European Championship, the country’s first major international trophy.

The former Manchester United and Real Madrid star also helped Portugal win the UEFA Nations League in 2019 and 2025.

His individual achievements include becoming the first male footballer to score in six different FIFA World Cup tournaments.

Ronaldo achieved the historic milestone during the 2026 World Cup when he scored against Uzbekistan.

He also holds the records for the most appearances and goals in men’s international football.

Portugal prepare for life after Ronaldo

Ronaldo’s announcement comes after a period of uncertainty surrounding his future with the national team.

The forward had reportedly experienced disagreements with Portugal coach Jorge Jesus over his role in the squad.

However, Ronaldo did not publicly identify the disagreement as the reason for his retirement.

The announcement means Portugal will have to prepare for future international competitions without the player who has been one of its most influential figures for over two decades.

Ronaldo to continue club career

Despite ending his international career, Ronaldo has not announced his retirement from professional football.

The Portuguese forward continues to play for Saudi Arabian club Al-Nassr, where he remains an active member of the squad.

His decision closes one of the most successful international careers in football history, leaving Portugal to begin a new chapter without its long-serving captain.
