According to BBC Sport, the 41-year-old announced on Friday that he would move to Philadelphia after leaving the Los Angeles Lakers. He spent eight seasons with the franchise. James, the NBA’s all-time leading scorer, is expected to sign what he described as the final contract of his career.
Cleveland Cavaliers, Golden State Warriors, Minnesota Timberwolves and Miami Heat had also been linked with the four-time NBA champion. However, James chose Philadelphia as he continues his pursuit of a fifth championship in his record-extending 24th season.
“I believe I can help make the Philadelphia 76ers a championship team and I am so excited to energise a new fanbase and start this incredible journey one last time,” James said in a post on X.

James joins a Philadelphia team hoping to win its first NBA championship since 1983. His experience and leadership could strengthen a roster already featuring established stars as the Sixers prepare for another title challenge.
The veteran had initially considered retirement after his final season with the Lakers. However, he later decided that he still wanted to compete at the highest level. His move to Philadelphia gives him another opportunity to pursue the fifth championship of his decorated career.
James spent eight years with the Lakers and helped the team win the NBA title in 2020. Before joining Los Angeles, he had two spells with the Cleveland Cavaliers. He also spent four seasons with Miami Heat, winning two championships with the Florida-based franchise.
Miami mistakenly fuels reunion rumours
Speculation about a possible return to Miami increased earlier this week. The rumours grew when the Heat mistakenly posted a link advertising an introductory press conference for James.
A team spokesperson later told Reuters that staff published the video while preparing for the possibility of James returning to the franchise. The organisation removed the post after confirming it had appeared in error.
James acknowledged his previous teams while announcing his latest move. He made it clear that they would continue to hold an important place in his career.
“Miami I’ll forever love and Northeast Ohio will always be home,” he said.
Philadelphia will become the fourth franchise James has represented during a career that began when Cleveland selected him with the first overall pick in the 2003 NBA Draft.
His arrival brings experience, star power and championship pedigree to the Sixers. He prepares for what could be his final two seasons in professional basketball.
