The Nigeria Labour Congress and the Trade Union Congress of Nigeria have jointly announced an indefinite strike set to commence on October 3.
This decision came after both union leaders held a joint press briefing in Abuja today. They have also called on their state chapters to mobilize for protests across the country.
Previously, only the NLC had embarked on a two-day warning strike, but now both labor centers are unified in their stance.
Emmanuel Ugboaja, the Secretary of NLC, revealed that this decision was reached during a virtual meeting.
Meanwhile, the Minister of Labour and Employment, Simon Lalong, has appealed to the NLC leadership to reconsider the strike, assuring them that the Federal Government is committed to addressing their concerns.
Lalong pointed out that one of the major demands from the NLC, the release of the leadership of the Nigeria Union of Road Transport Workers, has already been met.
He further urged the workers’ unions to grant the government more time to address the remaining issues.
