My ‘Johnny’ video gets 1.5m views monthly, highest by any African artiste online, says Yemi Alade
Nigerian Afro-pop singer, Yemi Alade, has said that the video for her hit song ‘Johnny’ is watched approximately 1.5 million times every month.
The Mama Africa as she is fondly called said her first big break was winning the talent show in 2009 because it was time for her to turn her hobby into a career.
She said her next big break was writing a proper song that eventually got released, “Ghen Ghen love.”
She also said on a global scale, her biggest break was ‘Johhny’ because at the moment it has the highest views by any African artiste online.
She said ‘Johnny’ is viewed approximately 1.5 million times every month adding that it is constant.
She said it also encourages her to keep working to exceed the figures. In an interview with HIP TV, Alade said the song remains her biggest break on the global stage.
‘Johnny’, was produced by Selebobo, and released in 2014. It was in February 2018 adjudged the most viewed YouTube video by an African artiste.
She said:
“The music industry for me is like a big school. You never really graduate until you quit. The most beautiful thing for me is actually getting recognition for the music.
“There are levels to every big break. My first big break was winning a talent show in 2009.
“On a global scale, my biggest break in terms of music will definitely by Johnny. At the moment, it has the most views by an African artiste.
“It’s an exciting experience. At the moment, it’s getting one to 1.5 million views every month.
“I feel very happy. It encourages me to keep working. I feel like the day I stop working is the day that the views will stop counting.”
The singer said although women in the music industry have become more consistent, the sector is still male-dominated.
She also said she has never being intimidated by the male artiste, instead, she has been inspired by them.
“Here in Nigeria, I still believe the music industry is male-dominated. The females have actually become more resilient, consistent and stronger.
“We are doing so well and I’m super happy to be part of this generation at this time when females are coming out in their numbers,” Alade said.
Alade said she will embark on a tour of Europe later in 2018. She is expected to perform in 15 venues in eight European cities.
