Her injuries were so severe that officials first thought the newborn had been attacked by a wild animal after being left at the temple before an autopsy revealed her wounds had been made by a screwdriver.

Officers say they think the tot was born at a house before being stabbed to death.

The infant has yet to be identified and police have launched a murder inquiry, the Times of India reports, and officers are searching through CCTV footage to try and find the killer.
