Man City deepen Newcastle’s woes with 4-0 mauling
Defending champions Manchester City have nailed relegation-threatened Newcastle United to their 10th defeat of the 2021/22 Premier League season.
The league leaders ran riot at St. James Park on Sunday afternoon with a 4-0 win to leave Eddie Howe’s men 19th on the table with just one win and seven draws after 18 matches.
Howe has lost all 11 of his Premier League games against City – the worst 100% losing record any manager has against a specific opponent in the competition’s history.
Rúben Dias (5′), João Cancelo (27′), Riyad Mahrez (63′) and Raheem Sterling (86′) gave Pep Guardiola’s men the emphatic victory that gave then a four-point lead atop the summit.
Guardiola’s City have recorded their 34th league victory of 2021, establishing a new record for the most top-flight wins by a team in a calendar year.
City’s lead could however be reduced to one or three, depending on the outcome of Liverpool’s clash with Tottenham.
A defeat for the Reds will automatically cement their four-point lead atop the EPL table.
Meanwhile, The Magpies are levelled on 10 points with bottom-placed Norwich City who have one game at hand.
Dean Smith’s side was hit with COVID-19, injuries and illness, forcing their fixture against West Ham United to be postponed.
