Florida issues major hurricane alert to millions of residents



The National Hurricane Center’s reveals that Hurricane Idalia is set to rapidly intensify into a dangerous major hurricane before striking Florida’s Gulf Coast on Wednesday. The forecast indicates a potential landfall to be followed by a trajectory toward the Carolina coastline on Thursday.

As of Tuesday, Hurricane Idalia was positioned over the southeastern Gulf of Mexico, approximately 85 miles north of Cuba’s western tip and about 370 miles south-southwest of Tampa. Its northward movement at 14 mph accompanies sustained winds of 75 mph, officially elevating it to hurricane status.

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis announced a state of emergency across 46 counties and activated 1,100 National Guard members in preparation for Idalia’s arrival.

The governor cautioned that the hurricane could evolve into a Category 3 hurricane before landfall, urging residents to take precautions.

Numerous communities are under severe weather advisories ranging from hurricane and tropical storm warnings to storm surge warnings. Evacuation orders or suggestions have been issued in 21 counties along the projected path of Hurricane Idalia.

The National Weather Service has underscored the potential for life-threatening storm surges and hazardous hurricane-force winds along the west coast of Florida and the Florida Panhandle, possibly commencing late Tuesday. 

Coastal areas, including Cape Sable and the Florida Keys are warned of storm surges up to two or three feet above ground level. Further up the coast, surges of up to 11 feet are projected for northwestern Florida and the Panhandle.

Storm surge, propelled by hurricane-force winds, poses the greatest threat to life and property. Flash floods, urban flooding, and significant inundation risks have been highlighted, with areas of Florida, Georgia, and the Carolinas expected to experience these challenges as Idalia progresses.

Idalia is anticipated to land along Florida’s Gulf Coast on Wednesday, with a potential for significant impacts across the state.
