Social media giant, Facebook, on Monday disclosed that it would take a decision on the suspension of former American president, Donald Trump’s social media on Wednesday.

The independent oversight board charged with the responsibility of handling the case since January made the announcement via its verified Twitter handle.

The statement read: “The Oversight Board will announce its decision on the case concerning former US President Trump on its website on May 5, 2021 at approximately 9:00 a.m. EDT.”

Recall that the Social media giant owned by Mark Zuckerberg blocked Trump’s access to his Facebook and Instagram accounts over concerns after the January 6 violent invasion of the U.S. Capitol by the former president’s supporters.
Reacting on January 7, Zuckerberg posted this: “We believe the risks of allowing the President to continue to use our service during this period are simply too great.”
USA Today reported that the board received an appeal on behalf of Trump seeking reinstatement of his Facebook and Instagram accounts in February.

It should be noted that Zuckerberg cannot overrule the decision of the oversight board which has the final say on what is removed or allowed to remain on the world’s biggest social network.

The oversight board, which currently has 20 members, was created by Facebook in response to criticism of its handling of problematic content.

Meanwhile, Trump’s accounts on other social media platforms including YouTube, Snapchat and Twitter remain suspended.
