Obama calls for unity as Democrats win US midterm elections

Former United States President Barack Obama has called for unity and responsible leadership following the Democratic Party’s victories in the November 3, 2026, midterm elections.

In a statement posted on his official X account on Wednesday, November 4, Obama said the election results demonstrated Americans’ desire for leaders who would address their challenges rather than deepen political divisions.

His remarks followed the Democrats’ victory in both chambers of Congress, ending Republican control of the Senate and House of Representatives.

Obama says Americans want unity, solutions

Reacting to the election results, Obama said voters had demonstrated their preference for leadership focused on cooperation and practical solutions.

“Tonight, the American people sent a clear message — they want a politics that brings people together rather than divides them, and leaders who offer concrete solutions to the challenges they face,” he wrote.

The former president attributed the Democratic Party’s success to candidates who contested elections across different regions, including areas previously considered difficult to win.

He praised their commitment to public service and their willingness to prioritise the interests of their communities.

“These results were only possible because outstanding candidates stepped forward in every region of the country — including in areas once considered long shots,” Obama stated.

He added that the candidates represented different backgrounds and political perspectives but shared a commitment to serving their constituents.

Obama thanks election officials, volunteers

The former president also acknowledged the contributions of election officials and volunteers from both major political parties.

He praised their efforts in ensuring the smooth conduct of the elections and protecting democratic processes.

“We also owe a debt of gratitude to the thousands of election officials and volunteers from both parties who helped ensure a smooth election and carried out one of the most essential functions of our democracy,” he wrote.

Obama urges action during Trump’s remaining term

Obama also called on Democrats to use their newly acquired political influence to implement changes and prepare for the future.

Although President Donald Trump has approximately two years remaining in office, Obama maintained that elected officials must take responsibility for addressing national challenges.

“While this administration has another two years in office, our job now is to roll up our sleeves, make changes wherever we have the power to do so, prevent further damage, and lay the groundwork for the future,” he added.

Democrats secure control of Congress

The Democratic Party secured control of both the Senate and House of Representatives following Tuesday’s midterm elections.

According to the Associated Press, Democrats recorded major victories in several states, including Texas, Ohio, Iowa, Kansas, Maine, North Carolina and South Carolina.

The results give the party greater influence over federal legislation, presidential appointments and congressional investigations during the remaining two years of Trump’s administration.

Trump, however, rejected suggestions that the election results represented a personal rejection of his presidency.

Speaking during an interview with Fox News, the President acknowledged the Democrats’ performance.

“The Democrats did a good job. They fought hard,” he said.

Nevertheless, the Republican Party’s loss of congressional control represents a significant shift in Washington’s political balance ahead of the 2028 presidential election.
