Manchester United started the encounter positively, creating several opportunities during an entertaining first half.

Bruno Fernandes, Matheus Cunha and Amad Diallo threatened Chelsea’s defence, but the visitors failed to convert their chances.

Cunha also had a goal disallowed for offside, while Chelsea’s Estêvão saw an effort ruled out.

Both teams entered the interval without scoring.

However, Chelsea broke the deadlock five minutes after the restart through Rogers.

The midfielder collected a pass from Romeo Lavia, drove through United’s defence and lifted the ball over goalkeeper Senne Lammens.

The goal gave Chelsea control of the contest and forced United to push forward in search of an equaliser.

Palmer doubles Chelsea’s lead after Martínez dismissal

United’s hopes of recovering suffered another setback when Martínez received his second yellow card in the 63rd minute.

The Argentine defender fouled Wesley Fofana inside the penalty area, prompting the referee to award Chelsea a penalty.

Palmer stepped up and converted the spot kick in the 64th minute, doubling the home side’s advantage.

Despite Lammens getting a hand to the effort, he could not prevent the ball from entering the net.

Chelsea continued to threaten after the second goal, while United struggled to create clear opportunities with 10 players.

Estêvão had another goal disallowed for offside, denying the hosts a third.

United came close to reducing the deficit late in the game when Bryan Mbeumo struck the crossbar, but Chelsea maintained their two-goal advantage until the final whistle.

Chelsea climb to fourth as United’s struggles continue

The result moved Chelsea into fourth position in the Premier League standings with 16 points from nine matches.

Manchester United remained provisionally 16th with seven points, just one point above the relegation zone.

The defeat extended United’s winless streak to nine matches in all competitions and intensified scrutiny of Carrick’s position.

The visitors had previously suffered defeats against Bournemouth and Como, adding to concerns about their performances.

Meanwhile, Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso welcomed his team’s improved second-half display as the Blues returned to winning ways in the Premier League.

Chelsea will now prepare for their next league fixture against Sunderland, while Manchester United face increasing pressure to reverse their poor start to the campaign.
