Nigerian-American racing driver Ugo Ugochukwu has won the 2026 FIA Formula 3 Drivers’ Championship after a dramatic conclusion to the season in Madrid. In fact, the achievement will always be remembered as an iconic moment in Ugo Ugochukwu F3 history.
According to The PUNCH Sports Extra, the 19-year-old finished second in the final race at the Madring circuit on Sunday, securing enough points to defeat British rival Freddie Slater in the championship battle. The Ugo Ugochukwu F3 journey was marked by remarkable consistency throughout the year.
Ugochukwu entered the final race level on points with Slater, making the season-ending contest decisive.
Tuukka Taponen won the race, but Ugochukwu’s second-place finish proved enough to secure the championship as Slater could only finish eighth.
Historic title for Ugochukwu
The result gave Ugochukwu 159 championship points, 14 more than second-placed Slater. As a result, the Ugo Ugochukwu F3 champion status was firmly established.
It also made him the first driver representing the United States to win the FIA Formula 3 championship.
“To win the championship is testament to the consistency and the job we have done throughout the year,” Ugochukwu said.
The Campos Racing driver recorded seven podium finishes during the campaign, including victories in Melbourne and Silverstone. Notably, every Ugo Ugochukwu F3 fan will remember those moments fondly.
Formula 1 dream gathers momentum
Born in New York, Ugochukwu is the son of Nigerian model Oluchi Onweagba and her Italian husband.
He previously developed his career through McLaren’s young-driver programme and has long been regarded as a potential Formula 1 prospect.
His title-winning campaign represents a major improvement from his debut Formula 3 season, when he finished 16th in the standings.
With Formula 3 now conquered, the championship strengthens Ugochukwu’s prospects of moving further up the single-seater ladder towards Formula 2 and ultimately Formula 1.
