The Nigerian film industry is in mourning following the death of veteran actress Aunty Ajara, who passed away on Wednesday, February 4, after a prolonged illness.
Her family confirmed the sad news in a statement, saying, “With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of our beloved actress, Aunty Ajara. She passed on overnight after a long and courageous battle with illness.”
The actress, a little person beloved for her unique screen presence and memorable comedic roles, had recently been hospitalized. Her condition gained public attention after a video showed her on a hospital bed, connected to oxygen, tearfully appealing for help. Top Nollywood stars, including Wumi Toriola, Mide Martins, Afeez Owo, and Ronke Oshodi Oke, had launched an emergency fundraiser to support her treatment.
In a 2024 interview that has resurfaced following her death, Aunty Ajara opened up about a deeply traumatic chapter in her life. Speaking on actress Bimpe Akintunde’s *Wasila Coded* podcast, she revealed she was sexually assaulted by a man close to her extended family.
The assault resulted in a pregnancy. “I gave birth to the baby through CS, but he died on the third day,” she shared emotionally during the conversation.
Her family expressed profound gratitude for the global outpouring of love, prayers, and financial support she received during her illness. They have asked the public to cease sending donations to previously shared accounts.
The statement concluded, “Our thoughts and prayers are with her family, loved ones, and everyone grieving this painful loss. May her soul rest in perfect peace.”
