President Bola Tinubu and Guinea-Bissau President Umaro Sissoco Embalo joined thousands of mourners on Tuesday for the burial of former President Muhammadu Buhari in Daura, Katsina State.
Also present was Niger Republic Prime Minister Ali Lamine Zeine. The remains of Buhari arrived in Nigeria aboard a Nigerian Air Force flight which landed at Umaru Musa Yar’adua International Airport around 2pm.
Vice President Kashim Shettima and Chief of Staff Femi Gbajabiamila accompanied the body back to the country. The coffin was received by President Tinubu, Governor Dikko Radda of Katsina, National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu and other top officials.
After a farewell parade, the body was taken by road to Daura where Imam Hassan Yusuf led the funeral prayer at the Daura Helipad at 4pm.
Former Nigerien President Mahamadou Issoufou and former Vice President Atiku Abubakar joined in the prayers. Emirs from Daura, Katsina, Zazzau, Dutse, and Kazaure also attended alongside business leaders like Aliko Dangote and Dahiru Barau Mangal.
Buhari was buried at his residence in Daura. Residents described his death as a huge loss. Salisu Lawal said, “Buhari was a great man who loved being among his people and offering a helping hand.”
Another resident, Aliyu Nasiru, said, “The death has created a vacuum that is difficult to fill. He will continue to be remembered for his good virtues.”
