Four arraigned in Osun for pub fight, property damage, others

Four residents of Osun State were arraigned on Monday before a Magistrates’ Court in Osogbo, the state capital, on charges related to a brawl in a pub, destruction of property, and theft.

The defendants—Abdulgarfar Opeyemi, Michael Abayomi, Opadotun Taiwo, and Azeez Abiodun—faced five charges brought against them by the police, including conspiracy, assault, malicious damage, breach of peace, and theft.

According to the PUNCH, the prosecutor, Jacob Akintunde, said the four friends were involved in an altercation at a pub located around Iyana Camp, Osogbo, on August 3, 2024, at approximately 9:00 p.m.

During the fight, the defendants allegedly assaulted Nurudeen Gazali, inflicting injuries on his head and right hand.

Additionally, they were accused of damaging property belonging to Owonikoko Ganiyat, including four chairs, four crates of beer, and glass plates, valued at N46,000.

They were also charged with stealing a gold wristwatch worth N160,000, owned by Habib Abiodun.

The charges against the defendants were made under Sections 516, 355, 451, 249(D), and 390(9) of the Criminal Code, Cap 34 Vol. II, Laws of Osun State of Nigeria, 2002.

The defendants pleaded not guilty to the charges. Their lawyer, Olatunbosun Oladipupo, requested that the court grant them bail.

Presiding Magistrate Dr. Olusegun Ayilara granted bail to each of the defendants in the sum of N250,000, with one surety in like sum.

The case was adjourned to September 9, 2024, for further hearing.
