FG targets 90% digital literacy by 2030

The Minister of Communications, Innovation, and Digital Economy in Nigeria, Dr Bosun Tijani, has said federal government wants 90% of Nigerians to have digital skills by 2030.

The minister, during an exclusive live appearance on Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily programme on Thursday said that the FG’s plan for the digital economy would not leave out any age group.

He said, “The goal is that by 2030, 90% of Nigerians should have digital knowledge. Digital knowledge does not mean that you become a technical expert; it gives you the basis to be able to decide whether you also want to join the digital economy.

“We have to make sure that as we invest in the drive, most of our population have digital knowledge, so that we do not exclude anyone.

“I’m not talking about people who may have physical disabilities, but also in terms of age. That’s why we have a programme in that plan called digital literacy.

“What we are doing is bringing in people who may not have the foundation and understanding of how to use technology. This is because we know that young people are digital natives. They are naturally familiar with technology, and they are always eager about it. We see them as a workforce that we can use.

“We need to have an economy where everyone is generally interested in technology and a large population of people has an understanding of technology.“
