S’Court fixes Dec 15 for Nnamdi Kanu’s judgement
The Supreme Court of Nigeria has fixed December 15, 2023, to give judgment in the appeals filed by the Federal Government and detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, Nnamdi Kanu.
The court decided on the date after the lawyers for both parties made their final submissions on Thursday, October 5, 2023.
The Federal Government is appealing against a Court of Appeal judgment that discharged Kanu of all charges and ordered his release. The government argues that the Court of Appeal erred in reaching its decision.
Kanu is appealing against a subsequent order by the Court of Appeal staying the execution of its judgment. He argues that the stay of execution is unlawful and should be set aside.
Kanu was arrested in Kenya in June 2021 and brought back to Nigeria to face trial on charges of treasonable felony and terrorism. He has been in detention since then.
