EURO 2020: Hummels’ own goal hands France 1-0 win over Germany
World Champions, France, kicked off their EURO 2020 campaign with a 1-0 victory over Germany on Tuesday night.
An own goal from former Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund’s defender, Matts Hummels, in the 20th minute gave the French side the all-important victory in their opening Group F match.
Die Mannschaft dominated their opponents throughout the game but failed to convert their chances as they could only manage one shot on target, likewise their opponent, whose four shots were six short of the Germans.
Karim Benzema almost marked a perfect return to the squad after a lengthy absence but his goal was denied by the VAR after Kylian Mbappe raced onto Paul Pogba’s through-ball and squares the ball for the Real Madrid striker who slots it into the net.
France go second on the Group F log behind defending champions Portugal who defeated Hungary 3-0 in Budapest earlier today.
