We’ve been supportive, DHQ reacts to military role in elections
The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has said the military has been supportive and complimentary to the Nigeria Police Force in the security architecture of the elections.
Director of Defence Information, Colonel Onyema Nwachukwu stated this while reacting to report of military interference in the elections in Rivers State.
It would be recalled that the British High Commission in Nigeria has also expressed concerns over the report, saying the military interference in the polls is putting stress on the staff of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and has made it difficult for them to carry out their duties.
Nwachukwu in his reaction took to his Twitter page and wrote:
“The role of the Armed Forces of Nigeria is not under any speculation. We have countlessly reiterated that the Armed Forces of Nigeria is constitutionally vested with the responsibility to act in aid of civil authority when called upon to do so.
“The legitimacy of the role of Armed Forces of Nigeria in the elections is enshrined in Sec 217 of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria as amended.”
He added:
“Our deployments have been supportive & complimentary to the lead security agency, the NPF in the security architecture of the elections.
“We will not be drawn into the murky water of politics . We remain apolitical and non partisan as a professional institution and a unifying agent in the Nigerian polity.”
