United States President Donald Trump has announced an immediate ban on three major news outlets from the White House, accusing them without specifics of reporting “fiction and lies” about his administration.
In a post on his Truth Social platform on Friday, Trump said he was banning CNN, MS NOW (formerly MSNBC) and Politico from the White House “effective immediately” .
“I am proud to announce that, effective immediately, I am banning Fake News CNN, MSNOW (who recently changed their name from MSNBC due to lack of viewership and credibility!), and Politico (The recipients of an illegal and ridiculous $8 Million Dollar subscription, an All Time Record, directly from the United States Government, under Crooked Joe Biden, in order to keep them ‘alive.’ Seems like corruption to me!), from the White House as a result of their constant ‘reporting’ FAKE NEWS!” Trump wrote .
He added, “Media Outlets shouldn’t be able to constantly write or report FICTION and LIES when they’re covering the President of the United States, the Trump Administration, or the United States of America. Other Fake News Media Outlets to follow. Thank you for your attention to this matter!”
The announcement did not provide details on how the ban would be implemented, and it was unclear whether it would affect the traditional White House press pool system that ensures independent coverage of the president’s activities .
The move represents the latest escalation in Trump’s long-running battle with news organisations he perceives as hostile. Since returning to office, he has pursued legal action against The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal and the BBC, among others . In February 2025, his administration barred Associated Press journalists from the Oval Office and Air Force One in retaliation for the outlet’s refusal to adopt his preferred name for the Gulf of Mexico .
CNN, MS NOW and Politico did not immediately respond to the announcement . The White House Correspondents’ Association has previously warned that “the president of the United States should not be in the business of arbitrarily picking the men and women who cover him” .
The ban is likely to face legal challenges on First Amendment grounds. In 2018, CNN successfully sued the Trump administration after it revoked the press credentials of correspondent Jim Acosta, with a federal court ordering the White House to restore his access .
