Ukrainian President, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, has expressed a sense of betrayal by United States President, Donald Trump, over restrictions affecting satellite communication services used by Ukraine’s military, warning that the decision could result in further casualties.

Zelenskyy’s remarks underscore growing tensions between Kyiv and Washington over military support, battlefield communications and the future of US involvement in Ukraine’s war against Russia.

Speaking before a meeting with UK Prime Minister Andy Burnham at Downing Street, the Ukrainian leader was asked whether he believed the restrictions on Starlink were imposed deliberately.

“Really, yes … but it’s a little bit more complicated than just my emotions or my feelings,” he said, adding, “It’s a pity that we are losing; we are losing a strong partner,” according to The Guardian.

In a separate interview with broadcaster Piers Morgan, Zelenskyy suggested that Washington was fully aware of the potential consequences of the decision.

“I am sure they knew what they did, absolutely. Because it was 1 a.m. Starlink was blocked by SpaceX and the United States,” he said.

He warned that the restrictions could have deadly implications for Ukrainian forces and civilians, stating: “This decision will bring a lot of human losses … of course, people will die.”

Satellite Restrictions Raise Military Concerns

The dispute follows reports of disruptions affecting Ukraine’s use of satellite internet technology supplied by SpaceX, the company founded by billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk.

According to the account provided, the Ukrainian military reported on Tuesday night that Starlink connectivity had suddenly become unavailable to systems travelling at speeds exceeding 100 miles per hour, without an immediate explanation for the disruption.

The reported interruption raised concerns about Ukraine’s ability to operate high-speed drones used to strike targets far behind Russian front lines.

The disruption was also said to have affected a critical Ukrainian defence capability used to counter Russian jet-powered drones targeting Kyiv.

Reliable satellite communications have become an important component of Ukraine’s military operations, supporting coordination between units and the deployment of unmanned systems. Any restrictions affecting these capabilities could therefore have consequences for battlefield effectiveness.

However, the circumstances surrounding the reported disruption, including the precise systems affected and the extent of any restrictions, require further clarification.

Musk Points to US Government Control of Starshield

Musk sought to distinguish between Starlink, SpaceX’s commercial satellite broadband service, and Starshield, the company’s separate satellite systems programme developed for US government military and intelligence operations.

According to The Guardian, Musk said responsibility for restrictions affecting Starshield in Ukraine would rest with the US government rather than SpaceX.

“Starshield systems are owned and controlled by the US government. Any limits on speed or usage are decided by the US military and ultimately POTUS, ” the Guardian reported.

The US government had not publicly responded to Musk’s claims at the time of the report.

The distinction between the two services is significant because Starlink provides commercial satellite connectivity, while Starshield is designed for government and national security applications. Their different ownership and control arrangements could determine who has the authority to impose operational restrictions.

Trump Presses Ukraine Over Attacks on Russian Oil Facilities

The latest dispute comes amid disagreements over Ukraine’s military strategy and the wider economic consequences of the war.

Trump has called on Kyiv to stop attacking Russian oil refineries, arguing that the strikes are contributing to rising diesel prices.

However, the account also points to the closure of the Strait of Hormuz following US-Israeli strikes on Iran as a major factor behind surging global energy costs. Disruptions to shipping through the strategic waterway can affect international oil supplies and energy markets.

The competing explanations reflect broader geopolitical tensions, with energy security, military operations and diplomatic relations increasingly intertwined.

Tensions Between Trump and Zelenskyy Date Back to 2025

Relations between Trump and Zelenskyy deteriorated significantly following a contentious meeting in the Oval Office in the spring of 2025.

During the encounter, Trump challenged the Ukrainian president’s position in the war, telling him, “You don’t have the cards” to win the conflict.

The confrontation triggered a diplomatic fallout that included a temporary suspension of intelligence sharing, while European leaders sought to repair relations between Washington and Kyiv.

The latest disagreement over satellite communications adds another layer of uncertainty to Ukraine’s relationship with its most influential international military partner.

For Kyiv, access to reliable communications and continued Western support remain critical as the war continues. Zelenskyy’s warning that restrictions could cost lives highlights the potentially serious consequences of decisions affecting Ukraine’s military capabilities.
