EURO 2020: Ukraine defeat N/Macedonia 2-1 to keep hopes alive
Ukraine secured a 2-1 victory over North Macedonia at the National Arena Stadium in Bucharest on Thursday to keep hopes of a EURO 2020 round of 16 ticket alive.
Andriy Shevchenko made two changes to the side that narrowly lost 3-2 to the Netherlands on Sunday as Sydorchuk dropped to the bench for Stepanenko while injured Oleksandr Zubkov was replaced by Shaparenko.
Andriy Yarmolenko who scored a screamer against the Dutch side last time gave the Ukrainians a 29th-minute lead before Roman Yaremchuk who drew Shevechenko’s side level against the Orange team scored his second goal of the tournament in the 34th-minute.
Ezgjan Alioski pulled one back for the North Macedonians in the 57th-minute with a fortunate rebound seconds after missing a penalty kick.
Ukraine pressed further and was awarded a penalty kick later in the game after VAR caught a handball in the wall by Avramovski from Malinovskiy’s free-kick, according to Google updates.
Ruslan Malinovskiy missed the chance to give the Ukrainian a 3-1 lead as his penalty kick was well covered by North Macedonia’s goalkeeper, Stole Dimitrievski.
Ukraine remains third behind Group C leader, Netherlands who face second-placed Austria later today at the Amsterdam Arena in Holland.
