Todd Boehly has left his role as Chelsea chairman. This comes as Clearlake Capital moves to take full control of the Premier League club.
According to an official statement from Chelsea on Thursday, Clearlake will acquire Boehly’s ownership interest as well as the stake held by Mark Walter. Meanwhile, Hansjörg Wyss will remain a stakeholder and partner in the ownership group.
The development brings an end to Boehly’s four-year spell as chairman. He and Clearlake led the takeover of Chelsea in 2022.
During their joint ownership, Chelsea said significant investment was made across the men’s and women’s teams, academy, training facilities at Cobham, and medical resources. In addition, investment went into the club’s sporting and business operations.
Boehly reflects on Chelsea tenure
Reacting to his departure, Boehly described his time at Stamford Bridge as an honour. He thanked those who contributed to the club during his tenure.
“It has been an honour to serve as Chairman of Chelsea Football Club,” Boehly said.
He thanked the Premier League, Chelsea’s players, coaches, staff and supporters, while also expressing confidence in the club’s future.
“I am confident that Chelsea is well positioned for continued success under Clearlake’s leadership,” he added.
Clearlake assumes full control
Clearlake co-founders Behdad Eghbali and José E. Feliciano also thanked Boehly for his contribution since the ownership group acquired Chelsea.
“Todd has been an important partner throughout our ownership of Chelsea, and we thank him for his time and contribution as Chairman,” they said.
“He will always be a part of the Chelsea story and family.”
Clearlake, which has been Chelsea’s majority owner since 2022, said it would continue investing in infrastructure, sporting performance and player development. This comes as it takes full control.
The club added that there would be no changes to its day-to-day operations, leadership or strategy following the ownership transition.
Boehly’s departure marks a major change in Chelsea’s ownership structure. Now, Clearlake is taking sole control of the club’s next phase.
