Norway’s King Harald has died at the age of 89. This ends a reign that lasted more than three decades and triggers a transition at the head of the Scandinavian monarchy.
According to AFP, the Norwegian royal palace announced on Friday that Harald died peacefully at Oslo University Hospital. He had been receiving treatment there after his health deteriorated.
Haakon succeeds father
His 53-year-old son, Crown Prince Haakon, automatically succeeds him as Norway’s monarch.
The flag at the Royal Palace in Oslo was lowered to half-mast following the announcement. Meanwhile, members of the public gathered to pay tribute.
Harald had been admitted to hospital on August 17 with haemolytic anaemia. This is a condition involving the rapid destruction of red blood cells.
His condition was described as extremely serious on Thursday, prompting members of the royal family to gather at his bedside.
Harald battled health problems
The late monarch had faced several health challenges in recent years and previously had a pacemaker fitted.
Despite reducing his public engagements, Harald repeatedly rejected suggestions that he should abdicate. He insisted that the oath he took as king was for life.
He became king in 1991 following the death of his father, King Olav V.
Harald was Europe’s oldest reigning monarch at the time of his death.
Norwegians mourn monarch
Tributes began appearing outside the palace soon after the announcement.
Norwegians remembered Harald as a monarch who frequently spoke about inclusion and national unity. He often mentioned the importance of bringing different parts of society together.
His death comes during a difficult period for Norway’s royal family. The family has faced health concerns and controversies involving several members.
Attention will now turn to Haakon as he assumes the throne and begins a new chapter for the Norwegian monarchy.
