Nigeria has partnered with Norway to deploy satellite-based tracking technology aimed at identifying illegal fishing activities within its territorial waters.
According to TheCable, the Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Adegboyega Oyetola, disclosed the partnership following a meeting with Norway’s Ambassador to Nigeria, Svein Baera.
The initiative forms part of Norway’s Blue Justice programme, which supports countries in combating illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing.
Oyetola explained that satellite data would help Nigerian authorities identify suspicious vessel movements and strengthen maritime surveillance.
Nigeria targets illegal foreign fishing operations
The minister raised concerns about foreign fishing vessels operating illegally in Nigerian waters.
He accused such operators of exploiting the country’s marine resources and undermining legitimate fishing businesses.
Oyetola also expressed concern that fish illegally harvested from Nigerian waters were sometimes sold back to local consumers at high prices.
“It is unacceptable that fish harvested from our waters through illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing are brought back into Nigeria,” he said.
The minister explained that the collaboration would improve the government’s ability to identify suspected offenders and respond to maritime crimes.
Satellite technology to strengthen monitoring
Oyetola said satellite-based monitoring would provide authorities with information about vessel movements and activities.
He maintained that better surveillance would support enforcement against illegal fishing and other maritime offences.
The minister also emphasised the importance of protecting the livelihoods of Nigerians working in the fishing industry.
He explained that improving the management of marine resources could increase domestic fish production, reduce dependence on imports and create employment.
The Federal Government expects the initiative to support its broader plans for developing the blue economy.
Oyetola maintained that Nigeria would continue working with international partners to protect its aquatic resources and strengthen maritime security.
