24-year-old man kills aunt, buries body in shallow grave
A 24-year-old man Christian Edem Eyo has been arrested for allegedly killing his aunt identified as Uduak Effiong, in Calabar, the Cross River State capital.
A report by The PUNCH stated that the incident happened on Wednesday morning in their residence, situated along Inyang Street in Calabar South Local Government Area.
Eyewitnesses said after killing Effiong, the suspect buried her body in a shallow grave in front of the compound.
Before burying his aunt, Eyo is said to have taken her head and dumped it in a pit in his room.
It was gathered that Eyo, also known as Etteobong, lives in a two-room apartment while the victim and her two children lived in a different apartment in the same compound.
Eyewitnesses said they saw the fresh head of the woman after she was killed that morning and also saw bloodstains in the room as well as in front of the compound.
According to one of the victim’s children, Nkoyo, the incident happened between 5 am and 6 am.
Nkoyo recounts hearing some noise made by vigilante youths who came to the compound early that morning, on coming out, she said she heard that someone had been killed and buried in the compound.
Nkoyo also said that she saw Etteobong and asked him what happened and he said that he had killed Uduak her mother.
“It was at that point that the police arrived and started shooting in the air which made me run into the house.
“He used a machete to injure one of the policemen before he was arrested,” she said.
She said her mother usually goes outside to take her bath in the morning, adding that it was someone in a nearby building that sighted the young man when he was trying to bury her mother’s body in the shallow grave he dug.
Nkoyo said the person then informed the vigilante who in turn contacted the police who came and arrested him.
When contacted, the Deputy Police Public Relations Officer, Igiri Ewa, confirmed the incident, saying “the suspect is under our custody.”
