Is Otedola Bridge under a spell? Twitter users ask after multiple accidents

Published

The recurring accidents on Otedola Bridge in Lagos have raised concerns among some Nigerians on social media who claimed the bridge may be under a spell.

The social media users expressed their concerns following multiple accidents on the bridge on Wednesday morning, the second accident around the area in the last one month.

The accident, which occurred around 8:40 am, halted traffic flow on the highway and affected motorists heading towards Berger as well as those heading into Lagos from Berger from Lagos – Ibadan expressway.

WuzupNigeria reports that the driver of a Toyota Hilux, one of the vehicles involved in the accident, has been confirmed dead, while the other female occupant in the van has been hospitalised.

Recall that in June 2018, in what could be described as the biggest disaster so far recorded along that axis in recent times, many people were burnt to death, while over 50 cars were also burnt in a fuel tanker explosion on the bridge.

Many motorists were thrown into panic again in October 2018, when another diesel-laden tanker fell on the bridge, just four months after the tanker fire which claimed many lives.

In February 2019, a truck conveying a container fell on the bridge causing traffic gridlock on the bridge and other adjoining areas.

In March 2019, tragedy was averted on the bridge when a BRT bus belonging to the Ogun State government went up in flames.

Just last month, another tragedy was averted on Friday 20 September when a fuel-laden tanker fell on the bridge, halting vehicular movement which left many motorists stranded.

Like in the past, the Wednesday morning accident made ‘Otedola Bridge’ a trending topic on Twitter.

The trend caused panic among Nigerians on Twitter who are now asking if the bridge is cursed.

Some claimed that whenever Otedola Bridge trends on Twitter Nigeria, it is always for wrong reasons.

A Twitter user, Charles Onyemakonor suggested that the bridge should be renamed after popular Nigerian preachers like Pastor Enoch Adeboye of the Redeemed Christian Church of God or Bishop David Oyedepo of the Winners Chapel.

“Is this Otedola bridge cursed? I think it was named after Chief Sir Michael Otedola, a former Governor of Lagos State and father to Femi, DJ Cuppy’s grandfather. Can we please rename it Adeboye or Oyedepo bridge? Because at this point, it’s becoming synonymous with deaths!!!” he tweeted.
