Give children moral training, not gifts – Cleric
Mr Solomon Abiola of Christ the King Church, Ilorin, has admonished parents to give their children moral training and not shower them with expensive gifts to impress them.
Abiola, who gave the advice in Ilorin on Saturday in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria, said good parenting goes beyond showering children with gifts.
According to him, most parents are not inculcating moral upbringing in their children, rather they believe in lavishing expensive gifts on them.
“Good parenting takes more than impressing children with all physical needs. You need to make yourself available and allow them to express their feelings.
“Parents should not over pamper their children. Punish them when they are wrong and teach them the moral ethics of life.
“Teach them to dress decently, teach them how to behave in public, teach them how to relate with people around them, teach them how to respect the law and always give them attention whenever they need it,” he said.
The cleric however warned parents to create time for their children and stop hiding under a busy schedule to listen to their children.
He added that good parenting requires special attention and responsibilities from the parents, stressing that children should not be denied such attention.
