Former Manchester United forward Memphis Depay has accused Brazilian club Corinthians of breaking an agreement to extend his contract by another two years. This came after the club decided not to renew his deal.
According to The Punch, Depay said the proposed extension had already been approved by Corinthians’ president. It was also approved by the club’s sporting, legal and financial departments before the decision was reversed.
“Very disappointed to read that Corinthians decided not to honour our agreement in place to extend my contract for 2 more years,” Depay wrote on social media on Wednesday.
Depay threatens action over contract dispute
The 32-year-old Netherlands international said he had respected the club throughout negotiations but was now prepared to protect his interests.
“I didn’t want this situation and always respected the club throughout the process, but now I am forced to react strongly in order to preserve my interests,” he said.
Depay also warned that he would provide more details about the disagreement publicly.
“In the upcoming days I will speak publicly but rest assured that I will not leave this unacceptable behaviour unsanctioned,” he added.
His comments suggest the dispute could move beyond a simple contract breakdown. However, he has yet to disclose what action he intends to take.
Corinthians cites financial concerns
Corinthians confirmed that Depay’s contract would not be extended. They said the financial commitment required to retain the forward was not compatible with the club’s current financial position.
The Brazilian side said it needed to prioritise financial stability and sustainability rather than take on another major commitment.
Club president Osmar Stabile is expected to hold a press conference to explain the decision in greater detail.
Despite the disagreement, Corinthians thanked Depay for his contribution during his time at the club.
Depay helped Corinthians win trophies
Depay joined Corinthians in 2024 and went on to make 79 appearances, scoring 20 goals.
He also helped the club win the Copa do Brasil in 2025 and the Supercopa do Brasil in 2026.
His two-year spell now appears set to end under tense circumstances. The player maintains that a renewal agreement already existed before Corinthians backed out.
The coming days could determine whether the dispute remains a public disagreement. Alternatively, it may develop into a formal contractual battle between Depay and the Brazilian club.
