A 24-year-old woman in Texas has been sentenced to life imprisonment without the possibility of parole after being convicted of murdering her five-week-old daughter.
Sarah Michelle Gilley-Wroe was found guilty by a jury of capital murder of a child under the age of 10 following the infant’s death on May 11, 2022, at Midland Memorial Hospital.
Medical findings presented during the investigation revealed that the baby sustained two fractures to the back of her skull. Experts determined that the injuries were consistent with blunt force trauma.
According to investigators, a search of Gilley-Wroe’s mobile phone uncovered incriminating Google searches. Authorities also said she made statements while in custody that implicated her in the child’s death.
Prosecutors further revealed that Gilley-Wroe allegedly confessed to a cellmate, saying she threw the infant against a wall and repeatedly struck her until she stopped crying.
Investigators established that Gilley-Wroe was the only person alone with the baby during the period in which the fatal injuries were believed to have occurred.
Medical experts testified that the level of force necessary to inflict the injuries was comparable to the impact of falling from a two-storey building.
However, Gilley-Wroe reportedly attempted to shift responsibility, suggesting that her aunt, the child’s father or the family dog could have caused the injuries.
Following her conviction for capital murder, the court handed down a life sentence without the possibility of parole.
