The Confederation of African Football has confirmed Samson Adamu as its permanent general secretary, making him the first Nigerian to occupy the position since the organisation was established in 1957.
According to TheCable, CAF approved the appointment following Adamu’s earlier selection as interim general secretary.
The 40-year-old replaces Veron Mosengo-Omba, who resigned from the position earlier in 2026.
The appointment places Adamu in charge of the administrative operations of African football’s continental governing body.
CAF confirms Nigerian administrator’s appointment
Adamu previously served as CAF’s Director of Competitions, where he was involved in planning and organising major football tournaments.
His responsibilities included coordinating activities surrounding the Africa Cup of Nations and CAF Champions League.
He also participated in administrative processes supporting continental football development.
The appointment was approved by CAF’s executive committee.
As general secretary, Adamu will oversee day-to-day administration and help implement decisions taken by the organisation’s leadership.
He will also supervise legal and operational responsibilities associated with the continental football body.
Adamu’s appointment marks milestone for Nigerian football
Adamu’s confirmation represents a significant development for Nigerian representation in international football administration.
The general secretary is responsible for coordinating administrative structures that support CAF’s tournaments, regulatory activities and member associations.
The position also involves implementing policies approved by CAF’s leadership.
Adamu assumes the permanent role at a time when the organisation continues reviewing its tournament structures and football development programmes.
His appointment follows years of experience in sports administration and continental competition management.
The development makes him the first Nigerian to hold CAF’s senior administrative position in the organisation’s history.
