The Bauchi State Police Command has arrested a 23-year-old stepmother and a 19-year-old man over two separate incidents involving the deaths of children in the state.
According to The PUNCH, police spokesperson Nafiu Habib confirmed the arrests in a statement issued on Monday, October 26, 2026.
The incidents occurred in Alkaleri and Ganjuwa Local Government Areas, prompting investigations into the circumstances surrounding both deaths.
The command identified the suspects as Fatima Ibrahim, 23, and Sadiku Musa, 19.
Stepmother arrested after boy dies in hospital
Police disclosed that the first incident occurred on October 16 in Kwaimawa village.
A boy reportedly became seriously ill after consuming a beverage allegedly given to him by his stepmother.
The child began vomiting and was taken to a primary healthcare centre before being transferred to the Federal Medical Centre in Gombe.
Despite receiving treatment for eight days, he was confirmed dead on October 24.
Following a complaint by the village head, detectives arrested Ibrahim for questioning.
The police confirmed that investigations were continuing to determine the circumstances surrounding the child’s death.
Police arrest teenager after girl’s body discovered
In a separate incident, a five-year-old girl was reported missing in Badaromo village on October 23.
Her grandfather informed the police after efforts to locate her were unsuccessful.
Residents subsequently discovered the child’s body in a small water pit behind the village the following morning.
Police operatives secured the scene and arrested Musa in connection with the incident.
Both cases have been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department for further investigation.
Bauchi police commissioner promises justice
Commissioner of Police Sani-Omolori Aliyu described the incidents as deeply disturbing.
“These are innocent souls. Children who looked up to adults for protection,” the commissioner said.
He assured the families that the command would pursue investigations and appropriate legal action.
Aliyu also urged parents, guardians and community leaders to strengthen measures protecting children.
The suspects remain under investigation, and no court has determined their responsibility for the deaths.
