Je’Von Evans made a significant career milestone on this week’s episode of WWE RAW when he stepped up to challenge Undisputed WWE Champion Sami Zayn in an impromptu championship match. Although Zayn successfully retained his title, the contest placed Evans in the history books as the youngest wrestler to challenge for the WWE Championship in 20 years.
At just 22 years old, Evans is now the second-youngest competitor to challenge for the prestigious championship.
The only wrestler to achieve the feat at a younger age was Kenny Dykstra, who faced John Cena in a WWE Championship match on RAW in May 2006.
Dykstra, who was a member and leader of The Spirit Squad faction, was only 20 when he challenged Cena for the title. At the time, Cena was in the second reign of what would eventually become a record-breaking total of 17 reigns as a WWE World Champion.
Evans’ opportunity to compete for the WWE Championship at such a young age further highlights his growing reputation and the confidence WWE has placed in his potential. Known by his nickname, the Young OG, Evans has continued to attract attention despite not yet capturing championship gold during his WWE career.
Before his showdown with Zayn, Evans had already challenged for the NXT Championship earlier in his career. He also earned a place in this year’s Men’s Money in the Bank Ladder Match, adding another notable achievement to his growing list of opportunities on WWE’s biggest stages.
While Evans was unable to dethrone Zayn on RAW, his historic championship challenge represents another important step in his development. At 22, he has already received opportunities that underline his potential to become a major player in WWE’s future.
