Real Madrid goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois has been ruled out of Sunday’s El Clásico against Barcelona after developing a flu-like illness.
According to an official statement released by Real Madrid on Sunday, October 25, 2026, the Belgian goalkeeper was withdrawn from the squad ahead of the La Liga Matchday 10 encounter at Camp Nou.
The Spanish giants confirmed that 19-year-old Ukrainian goalkeeper Illia Voloshyn had been called up as a replacement.
“Courtois is a last-minute absence due to a flu-like illness,” the club announced.
“Illia Voloshyn has been called up in his place,” the statement added.
Courtois’ absence deals Real Madrid major setback
The development represents another challenge for manager José Mourinho as his side prepares to face league leaders Barcelona.
Courtois, 34, has been an important figure in Madrid’s defence and had featured in all nine league matches this season.
Ukrainian goalkeeper Andriy Lunin is expected to start in his absence, while Voloshyn provides additional cover.
Lunin has yet to make a competitive appearance for Madrid this season, with his last outing coming against Espanyol in May.
However, subsequent Spanish media reports suggested that Courtois could still travel to Barcelona if his condition improved before kickoff.
The club had not issued a revised official announcement confirming his availability.
Real Madrid face injury, suspension concerns
Mourinho will also be without Brazilian winger Vinícius Júnior, who is serving a four-match domestic suspension.
Other unavailable players include Rodrygo, Ferland Mendy and Raúl Asencio.
The absences leave Madrid facing a difficult task against a Barcelona side enjoying an impressive start to the season.
The Catalan club currently leads La Liga with 27 points from nine matches, maintaining a six-point advantage over third-placed Real Madrid.
Barcelona have won all nine league matches this season and will seek a tenth consecutive victory against their rivals.
A win would extend their advantage over Madrid to nine points and strengthen their position in the title race.
Mourinho’s side, meanwhile, will aim to reduce the deficit and prevent Barcelona from extending their lead.
The encounter is scheduled for Sunday evening at Camp Nou, with Madrid seeking a crucial victory despite their selection concerns.
