Barcelona coach Hansi Flick has backed Lamine Yamal to rediscover his best form. This comes as the Spanish champions prepare for Monday’s La Liga clash with Rayo Vallecano.
According to AFP, Flick said the 19-year-old winger is making encouraging progress after struggling to immediately rediscover his rhythm. This struggle followed a hamstring injury and a demanding World Cup campaign.
Flick pleased with Yamal’s progress
Yamal endured a difficult opening league match against Elche before showing signs of improvement during Barcelona’s victory over Athletic Bilbao. However, he was unable to find the net.
Flick said the winger’s recent circumstances must be considered when assessing his performances. This is particularly important after returning from a major injury before representing Spain at the World Cup.
“I know everyone is worried about how is Lamine, how is he doing,” Flick said.
The Barcelona coach added that Yamal had returned from three weeks of holiday before beginning the new club campaign. He acknowledged that Yamal’s first performance was below his usual standard.
However, Flick said he was pleased with the teenager’s willingness to work for the team.
Yamal shows flashes of best form
Yamal played the full 90 minutes against Athletic Bilbao and improved considerably after the break.
Flick believes those minutes are important as the winger gradually works his way back towards peak condition.
“We saw him in some situations really on this top level,” he said.
The German coach was also encouraged by what he saw from Yamal during Sunday’s training session.
“Everyone loves Lamine and he’s in a good way. And we have to support him and we do that,” Flick added.
Flick plays down concerns over mood
Yamal appeared frustrated following Barcelona’s opening match against Elche but looked more relaxed during subsequent training sessions.
Flick played down concerns about the youngster’s mood, saying players should not be expected to appear happy every day.
Barcelona have won their opening two La Liga fixtures. They will aim to maintain their perfect start when they face Rayo Vallecano at the Spotify Camp Nou on Monday. The club has confirmed the match is scheduled for 9:30pm CEST.
Raphinha has operated as a makeshift centre-forward during the opening matches. This was after Barcelona were unable to land Atletico Madrid striker Julian Alvarez.
Flick said he remains satisfied with his current squad. Meanwhile, sporting director Deco continues working to strengthen the team before the transfer window closes.
