Real Madrid manager José Mourinho has dismissed criticism of Kylian Mbappé’s activities during the international break, describing the controversy surrounding the French forward as ridiculous.
According to BBC Sport, Mourinho defended Mbappé on Friday after the striker attracted criticism for attending a Paris Fashion Week event and riding a bicycle while recovering from a knee injury.
The 27-year-old withdrew from France’s international fixtures after sustaining an injury against Turkey on September 25.
However, photographs showing him attending social events in France and cycling in Switzerland sparked questions about his commitment to recovery.
Mourinho insisted that the forward had complied with Real Madrid’s medical requirements throughout the international break.
“When it comes to Real Madrid, it’s always different,” Mourinho said.
He explained that the club expected injured players to follow specific rehabilitation procedures and maintained that Mbappé had fulfilled those obligations.
Mourinho defends Mbappé’s professionalism
The Portuguese manager rejected suggestions that Mbappé had disobeyed his instructions by riding a bicycle.
He clarified that the bicycle was provided by a hotel in Switzerland for guests travelling between different sections of the property.
Mourinho also dismissed reports suggesting that Mbappé had visited a nightclub, explaining that the venue hosted a private Fashion Week event.
“Exaggerated, no — I think it was ridiculous,” Mourinho said when questioned about the criticism.
The manager maintained that any player who failed to meet Real Madrid’s professional standards would face disciplinary consequences.
He added that Mbappé’s inclusion in Saturday’s La Liga fixture against Villarreal would indicate that the forward had met the club’s expectations.
Real Madrid currently trail league leaders Barcelona by six points after seven matches.
Mourinho will be hoping to maintain his squad’s focus as the Spanish giants prepare for another crucial league encounter.
