Woman injured after glass exit door falls at Hong Kong shopping mall

A 39-year-old woman was taken to hospital on Friday evening after a heavy glass exit door fell from its frame and struck her on the head at Butterfly Plaza in Tuen Mun, Hong Kong .

The accident occurred at around 6pm as the woman was leaving the shopping complex. Although she was hit by the falling glass panel, she remained conscious at the scene before being taken by ambulance to Tuen Mun Hospital for treatment.

Photographs shared on social media following the incident showed security staff sealing off the affected exit with warning tape to keep shoppers away from the area. The detached glass panel could be seen lying across the floor of a busy pedestrian walkway, prompting concerns about safety at the shopping centre.

Police conducted an initial assessment of the incident and classified the case as an accidental injury.

Link Asset Management Limited, which oversees the shopping mall, subsequently issued a statement expressing serious concern over what had happened.

According to the management company, mall employees responded promptly after the accident, providing assistance to the injured woman and contacting emergency medical personnel. The company also assigned a representative to stay in touch with the victim and provide appropriate support during her recovery.

Management said the glass doors at Butterfly Plaza are subject to regular safety checks conducted each evening after the shopping centre closes. The latest inspection took place on Thursday, October 22, and reportedly found no signs of damage, mechanical faults or other operational problems.

An initial examination of the mall’s closed-circuit television (CCTV) footage suggested that the door had been pushed open forcefully shortly before it came loose from its hinges.

However, the company stressed that the precise cause of the incident has yet to be established, adding that a technical investigation is continuing to determine what led to the door’s detachment.

As an immediate precaution, management has closed off the affected exit and initiated a comprehensive safety assessment of all glass doors and their supporting brackets throughout Butterfly Plaza.

The inspection is intended to identify potential structural or mechanical weaknesses and ensure that the shopping centre’s facilities remain safe for visitors.

The investigation into the incident remains ongoing.
