An Air France flight travelling from Houston, Texas, to Paris, France, was diverted to Dublin Airport in Ireland early Monday after a passenger experienced a medical emergency during the transatlantic journey.
The flight, AF99, operated by a Boeing 777-300ER bearing registration F-GZNH, departed George Bush Intercontinental Airport in Houston shortly after 4:00 p.m. local time on Sunday, October 18, bound for Paris Charles de Gaulle Airport.
Nearly eight hours into the journey, the aircraft was flying at an altitude of 34,000 feet south of Ireland when the crew declared an emergency to air traffic control. The pilots transmitted the international emergency transponder code 7700, signalling a situation requiring immediate attention.
The emergency was triggered by a passenger who fell ill on board and needed urgent medical assistance, prompting the flight crew to seek a suitable airport for an unscheduled landing.
Following the declaration, the aircraft changed course towards the Irish mainland as air traffic controllers directed it to Dublin Airport. Emergency medical personnel were reportedly placed on standby to respond to the situation upon the aircraft’s arrival.
The Boeing 777 landed safely on Runway 28L at Dublin Airport approximately 40 minutes after the emergency was declared.
Medical Teams Attend to Passenger
After landing, the aircraft proceeded towards a remote parking stand, where emergency medical services met the flight to assess the affected passenger and provide the necessary assistance.
The diversion allowed medical personnel to attend to the passenger on the ground rather than risk continuing the journey to Paris while the medical situation remained unresolved.
