Bruno Fernandes produced a superb hat-trick as Manchester United came from behind to thrash Ipswich Town 5-2 at Old Trafford on Sunday. In doing so, they claimed their first Premier League victory of the season.
According to AFP, Ipswich stunned the hosts by taking the lead through Leif Davis. However, Fernandes inspired a dominant United response with three goals and an assist.
Ipswich strike first at Old Trafford
United entered the game looking for a response after suffering a 2-0 defeat to Hull City in their opening league fixture. Nevertheless, Michael Carrick’s side were initially made to struggle.
Ipswich took advantage in the 29th minute when Abdul Fatawu broke down the flank and picked out Davis. He fired an impressive effort off the underside of the crossbar and into the net.
The visitors remained ahead until five minutes before half-time, when Fernandes capitalised on an Ipswich mistake.
Matheus Cunha collected the loose ball and released the United captain. He drove forward before beating goalkeeper Kjell Scherpen to restore parity.
Fernandes takes control after break
United emerged much stronger in the second half and completed the turnaround in the 56th minute.
Harry Maguire’s effort took a decisive deflection off Jacob Greaves and ended up in the net. The goal was eventually recorded as an own goal after a VAR review.
Ipswich’s afternoon deteriorated further when Greaves conceded a penalty for a foul on Cunha five minutes later.
Fernandes stepped up and calmly converted from the spot to make it 3-1.
The Portuguese midfielder completed his hat-trick in the 68th minute after a deflected Bryan Mbeumo attempt dropped kindly to him inside the penalty area.
Fernandes controlled the ball before finishing from close range to put United firmly in control.
Mbeumo adds fifth
Fernandes was not finished influencing the contest and turned provider for United’s fifth goal.
His pass released Mbeumo in the 82nd minute. The forward then lifted his finish beyond Scherpen to complete a commanding second-half display.
Ipswich substitute Chuba Akpom pulled one back in stoppage time. However, it proved little more than consolation as United secured a 5-2 victory.
Fernandes’ treble was his second Premier League hat-trick. It came days after the Manchester United captain was named the PFA Player of the Year for the 2025/26 season.
The victory gives Carrick’s side their first three points of the new campaign after the disappointment of their opening-day loss. Meanwhile, Ipswich suffered their first league defeat following their promotion to the top flight.
