A man who fatally stabbed his estranged wife in broad daylight while she pushed their baby in a pram has been sentenced to life imprisonment in the United Kingdom.

Kulsuma Akter, 27, was living in a refuge in Bradford when she was attacked and killed by Habibur Masum, also 27, in April 2024.

The incident occurred in front of multiple witnesses in Bradford city centre as Akter walked with the couple’s seven-month-old child, who was not injured in the attack.

Masum, of Leamington Avenue, Burnley, was found guilty of murder last month following a trial at Bradford Crown Court.

On Tuesday, the court sentenced him to life with a minimum term of 28 years. In his sentencing remarks, Mr Justice Cotter described the killing as “vicious and merciless.”

“You pulled out a knife from your pocket and attacked her in full view of passers-by,” the judge said.

He explained how Masum repeatedly targeted Akter’s neck, adding that he “stamped on her” before “cutting her throat.”

Mr Justice Cotter concluded, “The wounds you had inflicted were unsurvivable, as was your intention.”
