The Ondo State Police Command has reported a tragic incident where a man set his estranged wife ablaze, killing himself in the process.
The incident, which occurred earlier this week, has left the wife with severe burns.
In a statement shared on its official social media handle, the Command explained that the man invited his wife to their home under the pretext of collecting her wardrobe.
“Mr. A was married to Mrs. A, but along the line, they had issues that made them stay apart,” the statement read.
The man reportedly locked the door when his wife arrived, threatening to kill himself and ensuring they would both perish together. Using fuel and a lighter, he set himself and his wife on fire.
He died on the spot, while his wife was rescued with critical injuries. She has since been referred to a specialized hospital for further treatment.
The police also used the opportunity to warn individuals about staying in toxic relationships.
“Stay away from toxic partners,” the police advised in their message.
